Following tradition Royalist Annabelle Thomas, of Riccarton, said Prince Harry was taller than she expected when she met him at Cashel St, on Tuesday. She has met three generations of royals, including the Queen Mother in 1966 and Queen Elizabeth in Greymouth in 1954. She was eight-years-old at the time, and remembered the Queen greeting her and putting a hand on her shoulder. Prince Harry did the same. •More photos, p11 PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

Residents oppose plan to move kart club BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Residents living near the Christchurch Kart Club say the cost of moving it is too high and want it to stay. Awatea Residents’ Association chairman Peter Dellaca said moving the club from Carrs Reserve would cost ratepayers between $7-$10m. “We have a totally different view to the city council. The city council wants to move

the club to free up land for residential development. The Christchurch Kart Club established its track and facilities at the reserve in the early 1960s and has a lease until 2054, if it chose to renew it. The city council has decided to support and fund the relocation of the club, because of its commitment to the lease. In 2013 councillors committed to $3,500,000, but the current cost esti-

mates are now $7,417,986 due to increased construction and utility costs. It was estimated a minimum of 380 and maximum of 670 households could not be developed on residential land south of the southern motorway unless the club is moved. But Mr Dellaca said the association would like the club to stay, and the surrounding land be turned into a business zone. “There is no little business park in

the south-west to support the population. “They have to go into town to see their lawyer or dentist.â€? He said noise would not be a problem for businesses because the club normally operated on a Sunday. “We have no problem with the club staying where it is, should it be a burden on Christchurch ratepayers?â€? •Turn to page 3

streets was taken into consideration.

Last week Western News asked readers if they thought the city council should remove four plane trees on Main South Rd to accommodate a U-turning facility into a new fast food restaurant. • Paula Greer The lights for Chappie Pl have crashes there from people not paying attention, the U-turn is more likely to increase that problem as the main clientele are more likely to take risks, instead of waiting for heavy traffic especially between 2.30 and 6pm. When Wendy’s opened, the traffic backed up to the Main South and Carmen Rds lights for several nights. Based on that Carl’s Jr. will be as bad, if not worse, so unless the city council is planning on diverting the ‘normal’ traffic, there will be massive problems either way as there isn’t the parking there that Wendy’s has. As the city council and a lot of people appear to think that if you have to park more than 10m from the door of a shop, you will not go in, they are encouraging the loss of fitness in the general public. Make the people use what is there. Put yellow hatch lines across the existing intersection and re-educate the driving public to their meaning, and there will be less near-misses or accidents. • Jean Sutcliff I totally disagree with cutting down the trees to make a Uturn to accommodate a fast food restaurant.

Also closing of the right-hand turning into Brynley and Tower Sts, as this would make it very inconvenient for all the residents in the area. Why do we have to put fast food restaurant needs before Christchurch residents and ratepayers’ needs? There was a restaurant there before and they managed very well without a U-turn. • Sue and Barry Miller We were pleased to read your article regarding the proposed traffic changes to accommodate the new fast food restaurant. Without your article, we would not have been aware of the possible major changes in the area, so thank you. We live in Tower St and are first of all, opposed to another fast food outlet in the area. Hornby has enough of these and we don’t think this is promoting healthy eating. If another food outlet was needed, then maybe a decent restaurant would have been more appropriate. However,

we are sure it is too late to stop Carl’s Jr. but feel that road changes should not be made to accommodate them or should any trees be removed in the process. • Margaret Nicholas I have been reading with interest your reports, in yet another sorry tale of poor management on the part of the staff at the city council offices. This matter should have been solved right at the stage of granting a resource consent, when parking should have been an important issue – was there enough land on the site for parking – was there a clear way to drive in and out of the site within the existing roadway. We pay our rates for the staff at the council to look after the city on our behalf which is a concept they forget so often. The fact that the restaurant wants to pay for some of the roadworks, should not have been entered until all the details of roading and the effects of change on the people in the surrounding

LAWyerS

• Graeme Simmons I along with a lot of residents are appalled to think the city council would do such a stupid thing for an American takeaway franchise. This is going to affect more people than what would use the takeaway outlet. It will affect the doctors, the dentist, the physio, the kindergarten and other businesses in that area. Main South Rd is already congested enough, with the line of traffic turning right into Carmen Rd backed up past the Countdown lights. If they put a right-hand turn into the takeaway, it is going to cause the traffic going towards Hornby to be even more backed up, and I can’t see people waiting for the cars turning into the drive-through, unless they put another set of lights there which would be pathetic. Closing Brynley and Tower Sts off from Main South Rd would affect between 200 to 300 houses. This would also put more pressure on Aymes Rd, which has enough congestion already and also Springs Rd, which is very busy now with the Wigram subdivision coming out onto Springs Rd. I can’t believe the city council is going to put $95,000 towards it. If they can’t find a solution for their drive-through they should find a better section to build on other than a main road. This is not a city council responsibility and they should stay out of it.

Renewed call for car parks

Monday May 18 2015

Residents oppose plan to move kart club

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

An idea to turn an empty site on Deans Ave into car parking has once again been raised. The Deans Avenue Precinct Society wants the site at 65 Deans Ave turned into a car park to accommodate those needing to stop for nearby for sports fixtures and work in Addington. The 6400 sq m area opposite Hagley Park is on the site of the old Blenheim Rd overbridge, and sits next to a new signalised pedestrian crossing. The idea was first raised last year when the city council and the Canterbury District Health Board were discussing the possibility of using the space for hospital staff parking. Deans Avenue Precinct Society chairwoman Claire Mulcock said the area was lacking in parking, and a space would be really good. “On a Saturday it’s absolutely diabolical.” Addington had grown and as a result people working there needed space to park during the week, and it was also not too far from the hospital, she said. “We just think it would be a really good use for that land.” The crossing there would also make it safe for those wanting to park and cross the road into Hagley Park, she said. “It would be nice to see something there.” She said the society had asked the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board about the possibility of putting parking there last year and the city council had expressed interest in the idea. Board chairman Mike Mora said

•From page 1 But the club told the city council last week that it wants to move because it is unable to expand at its current location and would like the funding to be brought forward. It has found an alternative site at McLeans Island, which it has a conditional agreement to purchase, depending on whether it is granted resource consent. The club plans to build a track at the bottom of a quarry, with barriers, and that would aid in the noise control for nearby properties. But Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust, which has an operation at Peacock Springs, has expressed concern with having the track nearby. The trust did not respond to the Western News. Last week city councillors decided to push back making a decision on issues surrounding the relocation. Councillors were given a report with four options, one of which was to leave the club where it currently is, and rezone the surrounding land for activities that are not noise sensitive. They unanimously decided to pass the issue on to the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board so it could come back with a recommendation, before making any decisions.

PROPOSAL: The Deans Avenue Precinct Society wants this empty site turned into car parking. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN an idea to use the site for hospital staff parking was raised last year, and that would have also been used for the Cricket World Cup parking. But it had not happened and the board had heard little of it since, he said. “For Hagley Park sports users it would be an asset and even by hospital staff at the start and finish of their shifts, because parking around the hospital is an absolute nightmare.” He said it was a similar story for those needing parks in Addington. Originally the idea was between the CDHB and the city council,

the possibility at the board’s next meeting. “I would love to be able to.” City council transport and city streets acting unit manager Paul Burden said there were no official plans for the site, but council staff were aware of the potential. He said using the site for parking would be possible, subject to appropriate resource consent approval. “Apart from possibly supporting weekend sport activity, it would be considered more for a ‘park and ride’ or shuttle type parking location,” he said.

Interest in science leads student Christchurch Girls’ High School student, Sienna MacArthur-Beadle, is one of 150 students worldwide selected to attend the International Advanced Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama, in July. Bridget Rutherford spoke to her about school, space and what she hopes to experience at the camp. So Sienna, can you tell me a bit about yourself? I’m in my final year at Christchurch Girls’ High School. I am junior liaison prefect, so I work with the juniors and make sure they are immersed in the school culture. There are two of us and we look after the year 9 and 10s. Is working with junior students something you have an interest in? Definitely. When it came to apply for prefect, I realised I was quite interested in working with younger students. They didn’t seem to have much of a voice just because they were the younger students, so I just wanted to help. It generally just means that we ensure they have settled in and they are making friends, and are happy. We work with the teachers and deans to provide assistance. And where are you from? I’m Christchurch born and bred. I’m from St Albans and I went to Elmwood Normal School and Heaton Intermediate before Girls’ High. And when did you first become interested in science and space? I’ve always been incredibly in-

quisitive, occasionally to the frustration of my parents and older sister. I’ve always been interested in science and especially space because I find it so fascinating. My time did used to involve my parents taking us to do random activities so we knew what was going on. When I was 10, we went to see an American astronaut talking at Canterbury University. His name was Donald Pettit, and I found that very interesting. I’d say that was one of the reasons that I became quite interested in space. The vastness of everything and the size and scale and the fact that it’s infinite is incredible. Can you tell me a bit about the camp you have been selected to attend? It’s called the Advance Space Academy. I think it has around 150 students attending from about

in the subject line of my email. I had a little panic and a little cry of excitement. I just didn’t expect it at all. Sometimes I assume I’m not going to get something, like when I do a test at school and think I haven’t done so well, but then it all turns out fine. Where is the camp? It is in Huntsville, Alabama. Have you ever been to the United States before? I haven’t. I’m going to be travelling there for the first time and without my family. But I’m used to travel and airports so I don’t think I’ll have any problems.

on space odyssey What are you most looking forward to about this camp? Well I’ve never been scuba diving before and that’s part of the simulator activity so that will be cool, but I’m actually just really excited about all of it. What do you plan to do in the future? I’m not fully sure yet, I’m thinking of going to university and I’m tossing up between Canterbury and Dunedin. I haven’t decided on a particular course yet. I’ve got to knuckle down and do some research on the courses, but definitely something to do with science and preferably hands-on. I’m not really into a desk research style job. Would you like to go to space one day? I think I would if I was given the opportunity. Most people when they watch all those space movies, they think things could go terribly wrong. But it would be great not to be limited to one planet and to see so much more. All I have to do is work for NASA and then I would be sorted! Would you like to work for NASA? I don’t know if I’d like to live in the US, so I’m not sure if I would. So what do you think you will learn at this camp? Generally I’ll learn specific space information but I would also like to work on my leadership and communication skills. It will be difficult having nothing in common with the other students there other than one thing. But I

ADVENTURE: The US Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, where Sienna MacArthur-Beadle will visit in July. think I’m naturally good at starting conversation already, so I’ll be working on applying the skills I’ve learned already. How long will you be in the US for? Well I leave from New Zealand on July 16 and get back on July 26. We all fly to Sydney first, and

then to Dallas then to Huntsville. I will miss all of week one of term three of school. How is the whole trip funded? There is a foundation called the Talented Students Travel Award fund and that pays for 70 per cent of my costs, so I only have to pay 30 per cent, so it’s very manageable. What subjects do you take at school and how have you found it so far this year? I take biology, chemistry, physics, calculus and English. We’ve only had a few internals so far and I’ve got all the grades I was hoping for so it’s been good. Are any of your friends interested in space like you are? I don’t think any of them would pin me as a space nerd, it’s more of a quiet interest. But most of my

friends are working at the same level as me at school. One of my friends from school has actually been selected to go to a science camp in Sydney. Do you have a telescope or any similar equipment? No I don’t. The stars are okay in Christchurch, I’d say mediocre at best in terms of clarity. But I went to the one in the Art’s Centre about a month before the earthquake when it was destroyed, so that was cool getting to use it before that happened. What are some of your other interests and hobbies? I don’t really do all that much out of school because it’s my down time, I get to come home and power down. But I read quite a lot and I quite like drawing. I did art in NCEA level 1 but I stopped doing that because I went down the science road. • The 150 students were selected from 23 different countries to attend the camp because they had a genuine interest in space science, and will be studying some form of science at university next year. The programme is designed to promote space science and exploration. Activities will include hands-on astronaut training, as well as learning about the mental, emotional and physical demands astronauts must face. Leadership training is also included and the students will experience scuba diving and four G’s of lift-off force and actual weightlessness in the space simulator.

Students bound for science camp Two students from Christchurch Girls’ High School and Burnside High School will travel to Sydney to attend a science school camp in July. Juliette Soule and Jessica Dunn were among six New Zealand students selected, to attend Professor Harry Messel’s International Science School which runs for two weeks. The students were selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand. ISS is an educational event, held biennially, based at the University of Sydney. The camp aims to encourage senior high school students across the world to consider careers in science. A total of 145 students from Australia, China, Japan, India, Singapore, Thailand, the United Kingdom and New Zealand will attend. Over the two weeks, the students will participate in a range of activities including lectures by renowned scientists, hands-on scientific workshops and an active social programme. The theme of ISS 2015 is BIG – big experiments, big discoveries, big ideas. The Physics Foundation at the University of Sydney pays for accommodation, meals and activities. The students’ travel is funded by the Talented School Students Travel Award, administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Ongoing talks over parking in $10m upgrade plan BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Further discussions about off-street parking options for a $10.5 million roading upgrade in Middleton will be held next month. The Riccarton-Wigram and Spreydon-Heathcote community boards will have a joint meeting on June 8 to hear the options for the Annex Rd, Birmingham Drive and Wrights Rd upgrade. The upgrade is aimed to ease traffic congestion in the area, but it meant about 190 roadside car parks would be lost to accommodate cycle lanes. Both community boards were concerned about where people working in the area would park. They approved the upgrade, but asked the city council to investigate other options for offstreet parking. City council staff will now come back to the boards with alternate options. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora told the Western News the board was concerned about cycle safety and that was why it was looking for an alternate option for parking. He said it was about trying to

find a balance. “At the end of the day we’ve got to try and cater for everyone.” The project ties in with the $30 million Wigram-Magdala overbridge and roading link, which will see a 100m bridge built over Curletts Rd. The traffic using the new link will likely have an effect on traffic through the Middleton Business Park area, prompting the need for changes. The proposed improvements would include a common widened road cross-section on Annex Rd, Birmingham Drive, Wrights Rd and Matipo St. Other major changes would include the kerb on the south side of Blenheim Rd between Annex Rd and Hansons Lane being modified to improve queuing distances for rightturning lanes. The Annex and Blenheim Rds intersection would have another right turning lane onto Blenheim Rd added, as well as a right-turning cycle lane and a signalised pedestrian crossing. The roundabout at Birmingham Drive, Vanadium Pl and Wrights Rd would be replaced by traffic signals with full cycle and pedestrian movements accommodated.

MANY HANDS: Hornby High School year 10 students gave a helping hand with a Gap Filler project last week.

Students pitch in to help out community Twelve Hornby High school students rolled up their sleeves to donate a day working for Gap Filler in the central city last week. Each year, 12 year 10 students take part in the Foundation for Youth Development Project K Programme, which aims to help students grow in self-confidence, and develop the life-skills to fill their potential. The 14-month programme has three key stages; a three-week wilderness adventure, the community challenge followed by 12 months of one-on-one mentoring. The students decided to donate a day to the Gap Filler as part of the community challenge.

This was their way of giving something back to their community. The students worked at the site on the corner of Durham and Peterborough Sts. They built a sound stage from pallets for bands to perform on. Then it was out with the paint brushes and on with the paint. “It’s so cool that we got to help make something that people are really going to use,” Tayla Shields said. “I can’t wait to show my mum on the weekend.” Once that task was completed, the students then set about creating a wheelchair accessible path through the area.

A highlight was that as soon as the path was completed, along came a group in wheelchairs and the students saw their work provide an immediate benefit. “We had a great day,” project coordinator Nicole Kelsey said. “It was awesome to see the students work so hard and produce really tangible results that they can be proud of and then to see others benefiting from it.” The students will complete the community challenge section of their programme at the end of this month, when they will be matched up with their mentors, who they will work with over the subsequent 12 months.

SuperNet champs start well BY KYLE KNOWLES

St Margaret’s have started the SuperNet season the way they finished it in 2014 – on a winning note. The 2014 SuperNet champions accounted for Marian College 28-20 but coach Helen Bryant described their first-up performance as “patchy”. “We had a slow start. It took a while to focus in the game and we dropped off a bit in the last quarter. It was a good defensive effort and it was good to get the first win out of the way”. Bryant said her side had a good preparation for the season with a number of warm-up games against other Christchurch schools in a tournament where teams played more than 10 games. Bryant said being able to play against other schools from Christchurch gave them a chance to gauge where they were at. She said the competition would be tougher than ever with traditional SuperNet schools Rangi Ruru and Christchurch Girls’ High not qualifying for the top section and playing in SuperNet reserves. As the defending champions, other teams may see St Margaret’s as a target but Bryant said her side was not thinking like that and were focusing on taking each game as it comes along and

not looking at the end game. “We don’t like to think of it that way. There are new teams and school netball sides change every year so we don’t go with that label (of targets) at all. We don’t consciously think of it and we are just looking at having a good game every week.” Bryant said captain Maddy

MID-AIR: St Margaret’s Lucy Thomson spread eagled as she attempts to block the ball.

Lloyd and vice-captain Lucy Thomson were the experienced players in the side who were expected to lead from the front. “They have the experience of being under my coaching for a few years now and know what I want to see and what I expect and they offer that calming influence on the side.”

St Margaret’s take on Villa Maria on Wednesday in round two who are coming off the back of a 33-all draw with Cashmere High in their first game. In the other two games, Avonside Girls’ upset St Andrew’s 34-26 and Ashburton college triumphed over Rangiora High 33-27.

“With low supply and high demand, wouldn’t you like to know what your property might be worth in the current market? Call me now for a complimentary, no obligation appraisal and experience the difference.”

Bus priority project draws little interest Today is the last day the public can have its say on the Riccarton Rd bus priority project – and there appears to have been little public interest. Submissions close at 5pm today, and just over 100 submissions have been received. There are three options that the public can submit on, with the first being whether or not to remove the Riccarton Rd roundabout. Plans include removing the roundabout and replacing it with traffic lights to cope with increasing traffic volumes. The other two options open for consultation are for central Riccarton from Clarence to Matipo Sts. One of those options is pedestrian-friendly, which has streetscape improvements to assist pedestrian movements. There would be no bus lanes, minimal on-street parking and restricted turns in and out of Riccarton Rd and Kauri and Division Sts. A median could run up the middle of the road with trees, and there would be on-road cycle lanes. The other option, the hybrid, would have a part-time eastbound bus lane which would assist with the movement of buses at those times. Roadside parking would be available outside of peak traffic times and a widened footpath on the southside would allow for some tree planting. A cycle lane would be incorporated into the bus lanes meaning

RELIABLE: Providing fast travel times for bus passengers is a key focus. the buses and cyclists would have to share at peak hour times. The whole project is focused on giving buses the right of way at peak times to provide fast travel times for passengers. City council infrastructure, transport and environment committee chairman Phil Clearwater said finding ways to make bus services more reliable is better for everyone. “We have identified outlined some options to address issues along Riccarton Rd. We want to hear what people think. “There are the bus priority measures, improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, and improvements for central Riccarton to make it a more inviting place to shop, work and do business. We urge people to tell us what you think,” he said. •For more information, or to make a submission, go to the city council’s website www.ccc.govt. nz/haveyoursay

MUCKING IN: Prince Harry helps plant some vegetables in the planter boxes at Canterbury University, before they were moved to the Riccarton Community Garden. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

Green-thumbed Harry helps community garden BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCE The Riccarton Community Garden now has a royal touch. Last week, Prince Harry went to Canterbury University to plant some vegetables in planter boxes made by the Student Volunteer Army. The planter boxes were then moved to the Riccarton garden community space, with the help of volunteering students. The students then stayed and helped by planting more vegetables, flowers and herbs in the planters. Loretta Te Paa, one of the volunteers said the helpers were wonderful, saying that she felt

honoured and wanted to thank all those involved. Another volunteer, Sheree Wharewhiti said: “I hope that the garden becomes a sentimental place, because of Harry’s touch, he’s a great promotion for us.” The Student Volunteer Army tends to help out the Riccarton Community Garden two or three times a year. Riccarton’s garden was inspired by collaborative decisions and community initiatives, and is backed by Housing New Zealand until at least April 2016. Ms Te Paa laughed off any questionable activities in the community garden, saying, “Sometimes you get the odd person who comes in and takes some veges,

but I suppose that’s why it’s a community garden”. The planters will be hosting winter vegetables like cabbage and broccoli for the coming colder months. Ms Wharewhiti added: “Riccarton is thriving, we have great diversity, and the garden is a great place to meet and engage. We’ve got a great community spirit here. It’s a blessing.” Around Christmas time, the vegetables will be harvested by volunteers and shared around the community to help ease the financial strain of Christmas. Any leftovers are given to the police, who in turn distribute them to poorer families in and around Christchurch.

Prince Harry visit

Christchurch was lucky to play host to Prince Harry last week. First stop was New Regent St, where Prime Minister John Key accompanied Harry on a tram ride before he visited Quake City and met Mayor Lianne Dalziel. He had a walk-through of Re:Start Mall in Cashel St, where hundreds of fans greeted him, and then he went on to meet the Student Volunteer Army at Canterbury University. Prince Harry left New Zealand on Saturday.

communicate in her job, and had a negative impact on her social life and wellbeing. Gayle says: “Tinnitus had been driving me mad for the last six months. I had been through the hospital system, had steroid injections, hearing tests and scans to hopefully find a cause, but the end result was being told ‘There’s nothing we can do and you’ll just have to learn to live with it as many people do’. “I felt extremely frustrated and a little despairing as I didn’t think I would be able to cope, and then a friend told me about Gordon & Till Audiology, who were specialists in tinnitus. I was worried about the cost but I decided that the chance of getting some help was priceless so I went for it and have never looked back. “I am a new person. I now have my life back

and I am not controlled by tinnitus. I had some loss of hearing with the condition but I can now hear again. People should be made aware that there is help out there for people like me and that a diagnosis of tinnitus is not a hopeless one. We don’t have to suffer and learn to live with it. I have found the whole experience with Gordon & Till Audiology wonderful. I felt understood, supported and ultimately I now feel normal.” Audiologist Carolyn Gordon says there is a lot of misinformation, particularly on the internet, about tinnitus. Aranui High Aranui High is delighted to be able to invite parents and caregivers to a number of visitor days over May to July to view our school in operation and to ask questions about the school’s current position as it moves towards the exciting future of the Aranui Community Campus.

W

ith its history of success and innovation in many different areas, the school remains in a strong position to cater for a wide range of abilities and interests. Aranui Academies continue to offer niche programmes which are as popular as ever. The Aranui Services Academy is one of only four in the South Island, which have recently completed their two-week induction programme at Burnham Military camp. This very hands-on programme caters for the needs of students who flourish in a very practicalbased environment with a strong focus on physical skills and development, along with military drill, self-discipline training and outdoor adventure, including involvement in the Hillary Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Aranui is also very proud of the fact that it is a host school for the Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) level 2 Cookery programme, where students attend for two

full days a week in an authentic commercial environment, and which provides 45 credits towards their Level 2 NCEA qualifications. All of our academy programmes, including Childcare, Carving, Basketball, Rugby League and Rugby Fundamentals and others are not only high interest programmes but contribute significantly with the credits for NCEA Level 2 and above. The new Aranui campus will be built alongside the existing school which will minimise disruption to the school. With this process beginning in July this year, students will have the opportunity to see this new project rising. With the spectacular multimillion dollar investment in the future of education in Eastern Christchurch, this new campus and the programmes it will offer will change the face of education in our region, and places in the new school will be highly sought after. We welcome you to participate in one of the personalised tours which are on offer over coming weeks. We look forward to meeting you and having the opportunity to chat with you about the school and the future developments. Members of the Establishment Board of the new campus will be present for prospective parents to meet and a display of the campus will be available to view.

Aidanfield Christian School continues to grow strongly and has become well established in the Halswell community.

P

rincipal Mark Richardson says that the roll has continued to grow and beginning this year with a very healthy figure of around 270 students. As a year 1 to 10 school, we have found that strong interest in the school continues to demonstrate the support of the church community in the schoolwide zone. There has also been an increase in parents who are non–church attending in the last year or two and suggesting there is a strong desire among parents for the values system that really good Christian schooling can consistently apply to life at school. Aidanfield Christian School is owned by The Christian Schools Trust, which has a long history of providing top quality Christian education. The trust has invested heavily into Aidanfield Christian School, and as a result all of the learning space, bar one, are modern and attractive learning environments. Two new classrooms are opening early next term and this adds to the 12 modern classrooms that make up

the school currently. A new school hall is currently under construction and planning is already underway for further classroom developments in 2016 as the school roll grows. “Our community is demonstrating confidence in the learning that happens at Aidanfield Christian School,” says Mr Richardson.

A

t year 9 and 10, students can choose to be part of Sport in Education classes at Hillmorton High School, where their teachers collaborate to produce engaging lessons based on the context of sport. They might for example, collect data in PE which they then study in a statistics unit in Maths. In English they could study “Speed Freak” or “Cool Running” and then in Maths consider measurement associated with the sporting context in the novel. Achievement data collected in 2013 and 2014 clearly showed that students in the SIE class outperformed their peers. A survey carried out by NZ Council for Education Research proved that they were more engaged, and had more positive attitudes towards study. Their attendance rates were excellent. Hillmorton is one of just eight schools nationwide involved in Sport NZ’s Sport in Education Project. If your child enjoys sport, then one of Hillmorton’s year 9 or 10 Sport in Education classes is a fantastic way of ensuring an engaging and positive experience at high school where academic achievement will prevail. Hillmorton High School does not have a zone, and therefore places at this “hidden gem” of a school are available to students Christchurch-wide.

rich sense of knowledge and creativity is the heart and soul of the successful and wellproven education system that Steiner stands for. Promoting imagination, creativity, academic acumen and hands-on learning skills from kindergarten through to year 13 is how the unique soul and spirit of each child is recognised. If your ideal school is child-focused, computer-free until high school, honours a gentle but effective learning curve that is driven by a child’s natural development

rather than National Standards driven, then the Steiner school is definitely worth a visit. We foster creativity and bring fun into learning in a highly structured way. Steiner education prizes the arts, creativity and imagination as multiple pathways to high levels of innovative thinking and efficient skill acquisition. Nurturing a child’s inquisitive mind is a key towards success, reflected in our excellent academic outcomes at primary and NCEA levels. Steiner schools do National Standards only at year 8, following Ministry-approved

learning progressions from years 2 to 8. This way we are able to allow all students to progress successfully and build up healthy self-esteem. Steiner education is equally rich with stories, plays, culture, literature, sports, art, maths, music, science, gardening, movement, festivals, care, love and enthusiasm – introducing each aspect of life at the most susceptible age, paving the way for a sharp intellect, a deep emotional life, a love for humanity and an intrinsic motivation for learning.

egistrations are now open for the 2016 Academic, Music and Boarding Scholarships at Medbury School. Located in Fendalton, Medbury School is the only independent preparatory boys’ school in Christchurch, offering an education for both dayboys and boarders from years 1 to 8. At Medbury, the focus is on the ‘whole boy’, so in addition to academic studies, more than 25 extracurricular activities are provided to expand the curriculum further, developing wider talents and interests. Medbury is a traditional school with traditional values and has a strong emphasis on manners and respect. Their vision is to provide an education that cherishes these

traditions, but also prepares boys for life in the 21st century. Medbury has adapted the NZ curriculum to meet the learning needs of boys. Small class sizes enable teachers to deliver a personalised learning programme, using a combination of technology and traditional teaching methods. When a boy leaves Medbury, he does so with an exploring and inquiring mind. He will feel confident, have high self-esteem and have an education equipping him for life in the 21st century. The scholarship examinations and music auditions will be held on Thursday, June 4. For more information, please contact Tanya Moore (Headmaster’s PA) on 351 6169 or visit medbury.school.nz.

Peerswick Scholarship 2011 winners Mark Holdaway and Dabin Jung

ear Riccarton High School awards two Peerswick Scholarships to year 8 students who show strengths in the academic, sporting, cultural and service fields. The term ‘Peerswick’ is an Upper Riccarton name which has been associated with the school since 1959 when the school magazine was named Peerswick. In the latter part of the 19th century, a local horse stud was called Peerswick after a famous racehorse at the stud called The Peer and the area was called Peerswick for many years. The 2011 winners were Mark Holdaway and Dabin Jung. Now in year 13, the two have made their mark in the school just as have all the Scholarship winners. Winning the $1000 Peerswick Scholarship was an achievement they were proud of as well as providing a useful investment for the future. At school they gained entrance to the top class, felt confident that they could achieve, and seeing their names on the honours board in the hall has been a constant reminder of their potential. Mark is one of the joint Heads of Arts this year with a fine pedigree in music. He is a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra where he plays the clarinet. He gained his LTCL two years ago in year 11. He has played for five years in the jazz band, the concert band, the orchestra, chamber groups and the sax quartet. This year, he is playing in the band for the school production of Bugsy Malone

in the first half and is on stage in the second half. He has been a member of the successful sport climbing team and has been school swimming champion twice in various age groups. Dabin is a class leader for a year 9 class this year and has played tennis, table tennis and badminton for the school and was part of the stage challenge team last year. She has sung in the choir and in the barbershop group. Both Mark and Dabin have achieved Excellence in NCEA in both year 11 and year 12. Outside of the classroom they have been part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award scheme, have attained the Bronze and Silver Awards and hope to complete their Gold Award this year. The two have medicine in their sights after they complete their year with Level 3 NCEA and perhaps Scholarship. Mark has been St John’s Southern Region Cadet of the Year, and his experiences with St John whetted his appetite for medical studies. As year 13s, they are very involved in student activities, organising events, mentoring year 9s at the beginning of the year and being role models through the school. They feel well prepared for this task as they have been encouraged to be leaders and show responsibility right from year 9. “Riccarton has given me many opportunities in class, in music and in achieving well through all my five years here. It is just the right size to get to know everyone and to be known by all the staff,” says Mark.

hirley Boys’ High School encourages students to strive for personal excellence. Learning occurs both inside and outside the classroom, reflecting the desire of the school to focus on teaching the whole person to ensure a lifelong desire for self-improvement. At Shirley Boys’ this is known as “BTB – better than before”. BTB leads to achievement which can be as modest as getting fit for a sport or improving a test score or learning to sing in a choir, or as spectacular as that achieved by 2014 Dux and Head Boy, Nic Wilson who was awarded a Premier New Zealand Scholar Award (awarded to the Top 10 students in NZ). Nic was one of only two students to get Top Scholar in two subjects. In addition, two other SBHS students received awards for obtaining three or more scholarships (including an Outstanding Scholarship) in 2014 and a further six received awards for one or more scholarships. At Shirley Boys’ High School, students are encouraged to participate in a vast array of sporting and creative (arts, drama, music, cultural groups) activities, and in many of these areas the students are expected to measure themselves against the best in the country and beyond. GETING THE RIGHT FIRST AID TRAINING

N

ot all first aid certificates are created equal. While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course. There can be big differences in first aid courses among a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA Training Requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as ‘Essential First Aid’, ‘Workplace First Aid’ or ‘Comprehensive First Aid’ and many other eye-catching titles. The term ‘workplace’ can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take care in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be, for training based on: months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours training and assessment. • Unit Standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551) - a minimum of 12 hours training First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and assessment and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment • Unit Standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552) - a minimum of eight hours training and process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. assessment Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational GLOBAL LEADERS IN FIRST AID TRAINING Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. The requirement allow for a three-month period of grace, so the cut of period is two years and three months, which should allow sufficient time to enrol into a suitable course. The refresher training should ensure the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. or Freeman White, home is where the art is. Home also happens to be in the heart of Hawke’s Bay where a renovated colonial villa doubles as Freeman’s home and studio. Renovations to it began after he graduated from The Learning Connexion in 2001. It has been, in his eyes, “an evolving work of art in its own right.” Just as home renovating requires a whopping amount of dedication and discipline, so too does the journey of becoming a self-sustaining artist. In Freeman’s case, all his work and constant practice paid off when, in 2006, he won first prize at the Adam Portrait Awards with his textural painting ‘Portrait of Hans’. “Winning was the most definitive point in my early artistic career,” explains Freeman. “This legitimised my work and allowed me to get my name recognised. It also opened up a number of opportunities.” Since that first major coup, Freeman’s paintings have been showcased in the separate Adam Portrait Awards and other shows such as the Hawke’s Bay Invitational and the Norsewear Art Awards. Freeman’s work has appeared in highly regarded publications in New Zealand, and seven of his paintings reside in the collection of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. The Royal Society of New Zealand has also collected his works; a testament to Freeman’s timeless and original style. It is no surprise then that he was nominated ‘Wellington’s Top Artist’ by the Wellington Capital Times’ ‘Best of 2010’ poll.

Self-portrait of Freeman White

Freeman’s artistic journey has seen him undertake a number of artist residencies in locations as diverse as Edinburgh and Louisiana. “I have always found these experiences inspiring and they always produce definitive work,” he says. “There is no better way to travel really. I love doing residencies…it’s like a dream come true.” Painting commissions (such as portraits for the recent What We Do in the Shadows film), as well as exhibiting work, ensures Freeman’s creative career remains sustainable. At the same time, he continues to evolve his thick and loose impasto style of painting, which is at the core of his perceptive portraits and iconic landscapes. And, always ready to up the ante, he searches out new opportunities and goals, one of which is to eventually win the coveted Wallace Art Awards. But it is his passion to steadily grow as an artist which is truly the foundation upon which he builds his flourishing career from his home base in the bay. This includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. In case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. ost people are aware that heat pumps are the most costeffective and convenient solution but how do you make sure you get the right one for you? Every manufacturer tells you their heat pump is the best, quietest, most energy efficient, and each has a multitude of constantly updating/changing models on offer. Plus, New Zealand homes tend to be very individual in size, shape and location, which greatly affects heating and performance requirements. There are three essential steps to ensure you get the right solution for your home: • Get the right size. This requires accurate measurement of the volume of the air to be heated in your property and an understanding of heat loss and air flow characteristics. • Get the right model. What was right for your neighbour might not be right

for you. Heat pumps are constantly changing and being improved. • Get it installed correctly. Probably the most misunderstood element. If a heat pump is not installed correctly it will not function at its rated output, may fail prematurely and void the warranty. The answer is to talk to a company that knows about all the brands and can give impartial expert advice. Heat Pump Guys are independent dealers. Unlike most companies that are tied in to one manufacturer, they are accredited for all major brands: Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Daikin, Hitachi, LG and so on. They have an obligation-free home appraisal service to advise customers which heat pump is best for them, so if you are getting a heat pump this year make sure you make the right choice. Phone their friendly staff on 0800 47 48 97 or visit www.heatpumpguys.co.nz.

Get rid of dampness

in your house

N

ow with the colder and wetter weather on its way, homeowners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy throughout winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects many older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury, especially post-quake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40L of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands the problems caused by rising damp and are here to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber

floored home. Specially adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications, it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently, is that many who had underfloor foam concrete installed reported that it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd now for your free no-obligation quote and complimentary appraisal of your underfloor ventilation needs. Phone them on 03 376 4608 or 0508 362 626 for more information.

Burnside High School Te Kura o Waimairi-iri

Privilege to lead the school This is my first year as Principal of Burnside High School, and I have rapidly fallen under the school’s spell. I have been welcomed warmly and have already developed a close affinity with the school, the students and the community. I believe in, and am proud of, Burnside and feel privileged to be its Principal. Burnside High School is very successful and has an outstanding reputation. We are leaders in learning because Burnside High School: • is a centre for academic excellence – reflecting its emphasis on high-quality teaching practices and in the outstanding achievements of many of our students • has a very large roll of 2600 students that enables it to provide an extensive, diverse and specialised curriculum that caters for and challenges students of all abilities

• is a caring school where students are known and supported as individuals within a positive, inclusive and well-resourced, fitfor-purpose learning environment. • has effective relationships with parents and the wider community that improve outcomes for students • is innovative and responsive to the evolving nature of society through continuous and rigorous review of our practices and procedures. The key to our school is its ethos and values based around “personal excellence and caring for others”. Our size and all the advantages that this brings is our point of difference and is what makes this decile 8, state, co-educational school special. I look forward to seeing you at our OPEN NIGHT on Tuesday 19 May. Phil Holstein Principal

Gallipoli Tree planted

New Deputy Principal takes up position

On Friday 24 April, Burnside Principal Mr Holstein, and Mr O’Connor, Head of History, planted a kauri tree to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landings. Accompanying the tree will be

a display board written by Mr O’Connor and designed by Year 13 student Niall Stewart, with information about a local man killed at Gallipoli. The planter box will be landscaped by Mr Land’s Environment Club.

At the beginning of Term 2 Ms Sally-Ann Goodman, pictured above, joined Burnside High School as Deputy Principal and the Divisional Principal for West Division. Ms Goodman was previously the Deputy Principal at Marian College and brings a wealth of experience in teaching and learning, and engaging students to achieve their best possible outcomes. She is looking forward to getting to know the West Division students and becoming involved in the wider life of the school. We wish Ms Goodman all the best.

Musicians selected for top Senior Girls’ Volleyball team win title national ensembles Six young musicians from Burnside High School are celebrating, having being selected for membership of New Zealand’s most prestigious youth ensembles. Hamish Smith (bass), Matt Howes (guitar), Ella Dunbar-Wilcox (vocalist), Robert Petch (drums) and David Petch (trumpet) were all selected to join the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra. Membership of this band is open to all New Zealand secondary school students and tertiary students up to the age of 19 and there are only 20 places available. The five musicians will travel to Wellington in July for an intensive rehearsal course followed by a concert tour of the North Island. In Wellington they will be tutored by NZ jazz legends Dr Rodger Fox and Dr Dave Lisik with special guest artist, trumpeter Scott Wendholt. In the classical music sphere, also selected for national duties in the NZSO National Youth Orchestra are Sarang Roberts (violin) and Robert Petch (percussion) who will join New Zealand’s finest young orchestral musicians for a rehearsal course, led by world famous conductor Jose Luis Gomez. Concerts in Wellington and Christchurch will follow in early July. The NZSO NYO is open to students up to the age of 26 so to be selected while still attending high school is an outstanding achievement.

Back row from left: Petra Manderson, Nicky Pio, Charlotte Coard, Chynae Stark, Tasmyn Fahey, Grace Vernal, Kate van Beurten, and Coach Mr Ryburn. Front row from left: Alice Zeimann, Evelyn Wihongi, Sophie Smythe, Tsubasa Nisbet.

Back row from left: Robert Petch, Hamish Smith, David Petch, Matt Howes. Front row from left: Ella Dunbar-Wilcox, Sarang Roberts.

Congratulations to the Burnside High School Senior Girls’ Volleyball team who won the prestigious title of National Secondary Schools Girls’ Champions.

The girls played in the final against defending champions Waimea College with the final result 3-2 making it the first time a Canterbury team has won the title since 2000.
